Λοιπόν, παρότι τρεις παραγωγές του, τα Amarcord Nino Rota (1981), Lost in the Stars: The Music of Kurt Weill (1985) και September Songs: The Music of Kurt Weill (1995) είναι στη σιντοσυλλογή μου και τα ακούω συχνά, δεν τον είχα υπόψη, ιδίως όπως τα λέει ο Τομ.
Rather than tell you what kind of stories I like, I’ll tell you a story. These two guys come out of a bar one night. They’re not drunk, it goes without saying, and it’s not much later than three in the morning. From down the street they hear someone singing. Opera. Now they’re both opera fans – naturally – and one says to the other, «That’s good. That’s Puccini.» And the other says, «No, it’s better, it’s Rossini.» So they go closer and the singer’s still going at it. It’s a guy, and he’s wearing a Stetson, and he’s big, but not much bigger than a garbage truck, and he’s singing at the top of his voice, like Maria Callas in «Figaro» or something «BACT-ER-I-A, BACT-EEEER-IA, BACT-EER-IA.»‘ ‘That is what I call a New York story.
Hal wasn’t what you would call a smooth talker or a hustler, but one night we followed him to a street corner in Chinatown at 3 am where together we witnessed a homeless man singing a passionate one-word aria to Bacteria. “BAC-Ter-I-A ..Bac Ter- I – A” with a heartbreaking tenor voice that equaled anyone we had heard at the Met, it was unforgettable.
Οι στίχοι του God’s Away On Business για την παράσταση ήταν:
There’s a one-eyed man in the poker pit
They’re digging up the dead with a shovel and a pick
The sun went down; the moon wept blood
A bloody jack of Diamonds, a plague and a floodThere’s a leak, there’s a leak
In the boiler room, the poor, the lame, the blind
Who are the ones left in charge?
Killers, thieves and whoresThere’s a leak, there’s a leak
In the boiler room, the poor, the lame, the blind
Who are the ones left in charge?
Killers, thieves and whoresGod’s Away, God’s Away, God’s Away on Business …
Bacteria, bacteria…
